What are acceptable formats for masking of primary account numbers (PAN)?

PCI DSS Requirement 3.3 specifies that PAN is masked when displayed and that a maximum of the first 6 and last 4 digits of the PAN can be displayed. Note that this requirement does not apply to those with a legitimate business need to see the full PAN. However, entities should also be aware of any stricter requirements that may apply to displays of cardholder data, such as specific Payment Brand regulations and regulatory or legislative requirements ? for example, restrictions for data displayed on point-of-sale (POS) receipts. PCI DSS does not supersede local or regional laws or other legislative requirements.
