SB nº 127: Modulation Measurement Clarifications (Spec Change)

v1.0 Specification Bulletins
Contactless

Specification Bulletin No. 127 First Edition August 2013 Modulation Measurement Clarifications This Specification Bulletin clarifies that since the PCD and PICC modulation requirements apply throughout the entire transaction, the associated modulation measurements should reflect this.

Effective Date

This Specification Bulletin is effective from November 2014 at which time any affected or new type approval testing will come into effect.

Applicability

This Specification Bulletin applies to: EMV Contactless Specifications for Payment Systems, Book D – EMV Contactless Communication Protocol Specification, Version 2.3 – February 2013.

Description

Currently in Book D the modulation measurements described in Tables 3.11, 3.13 related to the PCD modulation requirements and Table 3.15 related to the PICC modulation requirements make use of the WUPA and WUPB commands. Since the PCD and PICC modulation requirements are applicable throughout the entire transaction, the measurements should not be restricted to use only the WUPA and WUPB commands. This Specification Bulletin proposes more general measurement techniques which address this.

Proposed Specification Changes 1. In section 3.3.2

  • PCD Requirements for Modulation PCD to PICC – Type A, make the following changes to Table 3.11: Table 3.11: Measurement of Modulation PCD to PICC – Type A (PCD Transmission) Step # Action Step 1 Place the EMV – TEST PICC in the Operating Volume of the PCD. Apply no modulation to J2 of the EMV – TEST PICC. Configure the EMV – TEST PICC with linear load. Step 2 Send WUPA commandType A frames by means of the PCD Test Environment. Step 3 Capture the WUPA signalType A frames sent by the PCD at the output of the pickup coil of the EMV – TEST PICC and analyze the modulation characteristics. 2. In section 3.3.4
  • PCD Requirements for Modulation PCD to PICC – Type B, make the following changes to Table 3.13: Table 3.13: Measurement of Modulation PCD to PICC – Type B (PCD Transmission) Step # Action Step 1 Place the EMV – TEST PICC in the Operating Volume of the PCD. Apply no modulation to J2 of the EMV – TEST PICC. Configure the EMV – TEST PICC with linear load. Step 2 Send WUPB commandType B frames by means of the PCD Test Environment. Step 3 Capture the WUPB signalType B frames sent by the PCD at the output of the pickup coil of the EMV – TEST PICC and analyze the modulation characteristics. http://www.emvco.com. 3. In section 3.4.2
  • PICC Requirements for Load Modulation, make the following changes to Table 3.15: Table 3.15: Measurement of Load Modulation Characteristics (PICC Transmission) Step # Action Step 1 Set up the EMV – TEST PCD for nominal power as specified in Annex B.2. Step 2 Set up the EMV – TEST PCD for nominal modulation characteristics as specified in Annex B.3. Step 3 Place the PICC in the Operating Volume of the EMV – TEST PCD. Step 4 Send WUPA commandType A frames appropriate to the state of the PICC to a PICC of Type A or WUPB commandType B frames appropriate to the state of the PICC to a PICC of Type B. Step 5 Capture the response from the PICC at J2 of the EMV – TEST PCD and measure the load modulation (Vpp) with the EMV – TEST CMR. http://www.emvco.com.
