Application Note No. 32 First Edition February 2007 Advice requested in the Cryptogram Information Data Clarifies the conditions under which the terminal shall format and send an advice message.

Description

This application notes clarifies when an advice is created if requested in the Cryptogram Information Data. When the ICC requests an advice in the Cryptogram Information Data, the terminal shall format and send an advice if the following conditions that are shown in Book 4 section 6.3.7 are satisfied:

  • Advices are supported by the terminal acquirer interface protocol.
  • The transaction is not captured. When the terminal is not able to create an advice although these conditions are satisfied, the terminal shall terminate the transaction as shown in Book 4 section 12.2.5. Specification Clarification Notice In the next release of the EMV specification, the following clarifications will be made to:
  • EMV Integrated Circuit Card Specifications for Payment Systems Version 4.1 Book 3 section 10.8.2 Advice Message Change the second paragraph to ‘If b4 of the Cryptogram Information Data is 1, the terminal shall process the transaction as shown in Book 4 sections 6.3.7 and 12.2.5. Further information may be found in complementary payment system documentation.’
  • EMV Integrated Circuit Card Specifications for Payment Systems Version 4.1 Book 4 section 6.3.7 Table 2: Replace the ‘advice’ row with: advice, and if advices are

This section then reads: ‘If the terminal supports advices but is unable to create an advice when requested by the card in the CID returned in the response to the GENERATE AC command as descried in section 6.3.7, the terminal shall terminate the transaction.’
