Specification Update Bulletin No. 43 First Edition October 2005 Correction to the Coding of TA2 The coding of b8 of interface character TA2 is incorrect – this bulletin corrects it. This Bulletin has immediate effect. There are no Type Approval testing changes as a result of this bulletin

Description
An error has come to light in the coding of b8 of interface character TA2 as described in Book 1. The coding described is the opposite of that intended, and should be in line with the coding described for TA(2) in ISO/IEC 7816-3. This bulletin corrects the error. As the setting of this bit is explicitly ignored in EMV-compliant terminals (if TA2 is present in the ATR), no backwards compatibility issues are foreseen. Proposed Specification Change Notice Please make the following change to Book 1 section 8.3.3.5 TA2. Modify the first bullet to read:
- ‘b8 indicates whether the ICC is capable of changing its mode of operation. It is capable of changing if b8 is set to 0, and unable to change if b8 is set to 1.’ EMV Application Note No. 2: Coding and Usage of TA2 will be updated as follows: Paragraph two of the section titled ‘Clarification of coding and usage of TA2’ will be modified to read: ‘Bit b8 in TA2 indicates whether a card is capable of changing its mode of operation – b8 set to 0 indicates that it is capable of changing. This bit should be set according the card’s capabilities, but typically for an EMV card it would be set to 0.’ The first bullet after the heading ‘4.3.3.5 TA2’ in the section titled ‘Specification Change Notice’ will be modified to read:
- ‘b8 indicates whether the ICC is capable of changing its mode of operation. It is capable of changing if b8 is set to 0, and unable to change if b8 is set to 1.’
