Description

When a transaction is identified in acquirer interface messages as chip-read, all card-originated data in the message shall originate from the chip. It is not acceptable to populate the messages partially with data read from the chip and partially with data read from the magnetic stripe (if also read). This is of importance not only when a multi-application card is used. On a multi-application card, the application selected and used in the chip-read transaction might not be the same as the one encoded on the magnetic stripe. Specification Clarification Notice In the next version of the EMV Integrated Circuit Card Specifications for Payment Systems, Book 4, section 12.1, it is intended to add the following two sentences at the end of the penultimate paragraph: ‘For ICC transactions, the values of all card-originated data contained in acquirer interface messages shall be as read from the chip. It is not acceptable to populate the messages partially with data read from the chip and partially with data read from the magnetic stripe (if also read).’ © 1994-2005 EMVCo, LLC (“EMVCo”).
