Description
Sometimes a financial application on a payment card is linked to several account types at the issuer, such as credit, savings, and checking accounts. Some terminals prompt the cardholder to specify the linked account type to be used for a transaction. This terminal request can occur for both chip and magnetic stripe transactions. For chip transactions, the issuer may wish the selected account type to influence the behaviour of the application; for example, the card application might specify different CVM Lists or perform different card risk management for different account types. In many cases this may be achieved by passing information about the account type selected by the cardholder to the card using the PDOL mechanism. This information may then be used by the card to invoke the specific data, risk management parameters, etc., required to correctly process the account type selected. This Specification Update Bulletin defines a new EMV terminal data element that may be used to identify the account type selected by a cardholder at the terminal. The coding of this new data element is specified in a new Annex G to Book 3. An example of usage of the new data element is as follows (assuming the account type selected would influence the CVM or other card parameters): If a terminal supports account type selection by the cardholder (and supports the new data element), then prior to or during the application selection process (but prior to the Initiate Application process)
the cardholder is requested to indicate the account type to be used (e.g. credit, cheque/debit, etc). The information on the selected account type is stored in the (new) terminal data element “Account Type” as a numeric value. If no specific account type is selected, the value is set to ‘00’ (Default – no account specified). When requested in the PDOL, the information on the selected account type is sent to the card in the GET PROCESSING OPTIONS command data to allow the card to return the relevant AIP/AFL pair and to perform account type specific card risk management if required. It is NOT the intention to have this new data element transmitted to the acquirer/processor, as this might impact the “minimum data set” guaranteed by EMV; however, local communication protocols could use this value in the ISO 8583 DE03 field (position 3 and 4). Note that, alternatively, a private data element could be defined to provide this or similar functionality, if better suited to local or proprietary needs.
