This Application Note clarifies that the PDOL returned by the ICC in the FCI may specify the tags for any terminal resident data elements regardless of whether the data elements are defined in the EMV specification. When a tag in the PDOL is unknown to the terminal or when the tag represents optional data that is absent from the terminal, the terminal shall provide a data element with the length specified and a value of all hexadecimal zeroes as specified in the Rules for Using a Data Object List (DOL). Specification Clarification Notice In the next release of the EMV specification, the following clarification will be made to the text shown in the EMV Integrated Circuit Card Specifications for Payment Systems Book 3 Version 4.1 May 2004 Section 10.1 In the second paragraph below the Description heading, the words "identified in this specification as" will be deleted from the second sentence so that the sentence reads "Only data elements having the terminal as the source of the data may be referenced in the PDOL." © 1994-2004 EMVCo, LLC (“EMVCo”).
