Specification Update Bulletin No. 31 First Edition April 2004 This Bulletin has immediate effect Products will be tested against the requirements of this bulletin commencing 1st October 2004 Support Requirements for Character Sets.

Applicability

This Specification Update Bulletin applies to:

  • EMV '96 Integrated Circuit Card Terminal Specification for Payment Systems Version 3.1.1 and EMV 2000 Integrated Circuit Card Specifications for Payment Systems Version 4.0. Book 4 Cardholder, Attendant and Acquirer Interface Requirements.

None. This bulletin is intended to clarify the requirements regarding the support for necessary character sets in a terminal. It is clarified that all terminals shall support at least the common character set, and should support a local language character set if applicable. This means that the Common Character set is mandatory for all terminals. Proposed Changes Please make the following change to EMV '96 Integrated Circuit Card Terminal Specification for Payment Systems Version 3.1.1 Section 7.1 and to EMV 2000 Integrated Circuit Card Specifications for Payment Systems Version 4.0 Book 4 Section 7.1: The final sentence of the first paragraph of Book 4, section 7.1 is modified to say: ‘To display the standard messages defined in section 7.2, the terminal shall support the common character set as defined in Annex B, and should support the relevant character set defined in the corresponding part of ISO 8859 when necessary’.
