These data elements allow information about the Issuer, country of issue and the account linked to the application to be returned to the terminal during the application selection process without risk of data duplication during processing of the transaction, and without the need to define proprietary data elements to serve this purpose. Uniquely identifies a bank as defined in ISO 9362. Uniquely identifies the account of a customer at a financial institution as defined in ISO 13616. Indicates the country of the issuer as defined in ISO 3166 (using a 2 character alphabetic code) Indicates the country of the issuer as defined in ISO 3166 (using a 3 character alphabetic code) The number that identifies the major industry and the card issuer and that forms the first part of the Primary Account Number (PAN) Source ICC ICC ICC ICC ICC Format var. Background

Information on BIC and IBAN These data elements are commonly used by and between banks. During application selection they could serve to invoke proprietary, domestic or on-us processing, and could also provide a tool for account identification.

  • Bank Identifier Code (BIC) The BIC, also known as the SWIFT code, identifies a Bank and is defined in ISO 9362.
  • International Bank Account Number (IBAN) The IBAN is an expanded version of the BBAN used internationally to uniquely identify the account of a customer at a financial institution as defined in ISO standard 13616. The BBAN (which forms part of the IBAN) is the identifier used by financial institutions in individual countries as part of a National Account Numbering Scheme(s) which uniquely identifies an account of a customer at a financial institution. Copyright © EMVCo LLC 2004 The IBAN concept was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is an internationally agreed standard ISO 13616: 2003. It is also used by SWIFT for interbank money transfers. The structures of the BIC and IBAN are defined in ISO 9362 and ISO 13616 respectively. It should be noted however that current banking implementations, especially SWIFT, impose certain restrictions on the format and structure allowed by ISO. For SWIFT, for example, the BBAN has a fixed length per country padded with leading zeroes if required, and the characters allowed are restricted to uppercase 0 to 9 and A to Z. Since these data elements are only allowed in templates containing Issuer Discretionary data, if used, Issuers should follow their current banking practices for the format of the BIC and IBAN. Corresponding proprietary terminal processing designed to make use of these data elements will, of course, need to recognise the format used by the Issuer. If used in proprietary processing, it is recommended that terminals recognise the full range of formats and characters allowable by ISO.
