v1.0 Specification Bulletins

Application Note No. 10, June 30th, 2003 Application Note – Book 1 Guidance on Placement of Alternative Technologies on EMV Cards EMV '96 Version 3.1.1 and EMV 2000 Version 4.0 The purpose of this application note is to clarify the available locations for alternative technologies on EMV cards according to requirements of ISO 7810, ISO 7811, ISO 7816, and ISO 14443. This application note applies to EMV '96 Version 3.1.1 and EMV 2000 Version 4.0. This application note applies to EMV '96 Integrated Circuit Card Specification for Payment Systems Integrated Circuit Card Specification for Payment Systems Version 3.1.1 and to EMV 2000 Integrated Circuit Card Specifications for Payment Systems Book 1 Version 4.0. Issuers may choose to place alternative technologies such as fingerprint scanners, displays, and antennas on EMV cards. These technologies should not be placed in areas of the card where they could be damaged by card features such as printing, embossing, and the magnetic stripe. The positions specified for these features by ISO are shown in the following diagram. The payment systems may have defined card features such as holograms, printing, and hot stamped signature panels that should also be considered when positioning these alternative technologies. The following figures show the location of these areas on the front and back of the card. The figures are not to scale. Refer to the legends for the specific measurements defined in ISO.
