Revised Specifications Updates Bulletin no. 02, February 2001 The contents of this bulletin have immediate effect. Terminal Implementation Clarifications Part 1 of the EMV '96 version 3.1.1 Integrated Circuit Card Specifications describes requirements for both the integrated circuit card (ICC) and the terminal. To ensure consistent implementation and interoperability, and to preclude cards from being rejected unnecessarily, EMVCo has made some clarifications to the sections below. These clarifications will assist in aligning test requirements and facilitate a single approval process. It is EMVCo's intention to incorporate these clarifications into the next release of EMV'96, due for publication during the second half of 2000.

  • Section 5.2.4.1.1.1 -Node Addressing These specifications do not support node addressing. 1. Replace the 2nd paragraph with the following: "These specifications do not support node addressing. The first block sent by the terminal following the ATR and all following blocks transmitted by either the terminal or ICC shall have the NAD = '00' for all exchanges including the application selection process and in the subsequent support of EMV defined applications." 2. Keep the 3rd paragraph 3. Replace the last sentence of the note with the following: "A terminal that optionally supports node addressing may change the NAD value after successful selection of a proprietary application."
  • Section 4.3.3.10 - TB3 The formula in the 'Terminal Behaviour:' section is incorrect. Modify the formula to read '2CWI <= (N + 1)'. Also, add a sentence to the end of the note as follows. 'Since the maximum value for CWI allowed by these Specifications is 5, note that when T=1 is used, TCI shall have a value in the range '00' to 'IE' or a value of 'FF' in order to avoid a conflict between TCI and TB3.'
  • Section 5.2.4.3 - T=1 - Error Free Operation 1. Another bullet to be inserted as bullet #9: "When an R-block is received, b5 shall be evaluated. Terminals complying with this specification are not required to evaluate bits b4-b1. Optional evaluation of bits b4-b1 shall not result in any action which contradicts the protocol rules defined in this specification". 2. In the new bullet #10 delete the words 'and it has bits b4-b1 set to '0' (indicating an error free block).
  • Section 5.2.4.4.1 - T=1 - Rules for Chaining Bullet 3. Delete 'with bits b4-b1 of the PCB having a value of '2' (see Table I-24)' from the end of the bullet.
  • Section 5.2.5.1 - Protocol Rules for Error Handling 1. 1st paragraph 2nd sentence. Replace 2nd sentence with 'In each case where an R-block is sent, the error coding bits b4-b1 may optionally be evaluated, but shall not result in any action which contradicts the protocol rules defined in this Specification'. 2. Bullet 7. Delete the last sentence 'The error coding bits b4-b1 of R-blocks shall be ignored'.
