Specification Bulletin No. 168 First Edition May 2015 Amended Timing Requirements This Specification Bulletin amends and clarifies the time-out exception handling requirements during the collision detection and activation sequences.

Applicability

This Specification Bulletin applies to:

  • EMV Contactless Specifications for Payment Systems, Book D – EMV Contactless Communication Protocol Specification, Version 2.5 – March 2015.

Description

Requirement 9.6.1.3 states: The PCD shall retransmit the command within a time tRETRANSMISSION after the maximum allowed response time applicable for the command (refer to section 4.8). This bulletin clarifies "the maximum allowed response time" as the maximum frame delay time plus a fixed time that incorporates the time it would have taken to transmit the response plus FDTPCD.

Specification Changes Change 9.6.1.3 as follows: PICC 9.6.1.3. On detection of a time-out error (except during the polling and removal procedures):

  • The PCD shall retransmit the command a maximum of two times. The PCD shall retransmit the command after FDTPICC,MAX + tMIN,RETRANSMISSION and before FDTPICC,MAX + tRETRANSMISSION. Refer to Annex A for the value of tMIN,RETRANSMISSION The PCD shall retransmit the command no later than tRETRANSMISSION after the maximum allowed response time applicable for the command (refer to section 4.8).
  • If on the third trial on the second retransmission (third transmission), no valid response has been received:
  • The PCD shall report a time-out error to the terminal, reset the Operating Field (as defined in section 3.2.6) and return to the polling procedure.
  • The PCD shall start the reset of the PICC no later than tRESETDELAY after the maximum allowed response time applicable for the command.
