Specification Bulletin No. 161 First Edition May 2015 Reserve TVR and AIP Bits for Contactless This Specification Bulletin reserves four of the currently RFU bits in the Terminal Verification Results (TVR) and two of the currently RFU bits in the Application Interchange Profile (AIP) for use by the contactless specifications.

Description

The EMV Contactless Specifications require that four of the currently RFU bits in the Terminal Verification Results (TVR) and two of the currently RFU bits in the Application Interchange Profile (AIP) to be reserved for use by contactless implementations. The EMV 4.3 specification, Book 3 section C1 describes the coding of the AIP and section C5 describes the coding of the TVR, and the use of these bits is described in the relevant contactless specifications. In order to ensure that in the future these bits are not assigned a different meaning outside the contactless specifications, it is necessary to indicate that they are reserved for use for contactless implementations.

Specification Change In EMV 4.3 Book 3, section C1, Table 37, change the ‘Meaning’ for byte 2 bits 1 and 6 from ‘RFU’ to ‘Reserved for use by the EMV Contactless Specifications’. In EMV 4.3 Book 3, section C5, Table 42, change the ‘Meaning’ for byte 5 bits 1, 2, 3 and 4 from ‘RFU’ to ‘Reserved for use by the EMV Contactless Specifications’.
