EMV® Terminal Type Approval Bulletin No. 293 First Edition, June 2026 Contact Terminal Level 2 Type Approval Contactless Product Type Approval Terminals not able to process transaction dates beyond January 19, 2038 Applicability This Bulletin applies to: • All Contact Terminal Level 2 Type Approval • All Contactless Product Type Approval Related Documents • Type Approval Bulletin No. 199 – Specific Approval Rules – 7th Edition Effective Date • December 1st, 2026 Description The industry is currently facing a limitation related to legacy 32-bit OS versions that calculate date and time from 1970 resulting in a maximum representable value in January 2038 making transactions impossible after this date. Kernels having this limitation are still accepted during Type Approval with a note in the LOAs (as per Type Approval Bulletin 199, 7th Edition). Given that the typical terminal lifespan in the field is usually regarded as seven to eight years, EMVCo aims to ensure that all kernels (whether contact or contactless) with Letters of Approval (LOAs) valid beyond January 2031 are able to process transactions after 2038. The present Type Approval Bulletin defines that LOAs of Contact Level 2 Kernels and LOAs of Contactless Products having this limitation will have a cap on their validity date. All new approvals or renewals of Contact Level 2 Kernels and Contactless Products with this limitation will have a maximum validity date of December 31st, 2030. © 2026 EMVCo, LLC.
