EMV® Terminal Type Approval Bulletin No. 275 Second Edition September 2024 Reduced Range Devices Testing Process This Bulletin announces the release of documents for the Reduced Range testing Process Applicability This Bulletin applies to: • Contactless Terminal Level 1 Type Approval Process Related Documents This Bulletin should be read in conjunction with: • EMV Terminal Type Approval Bulletin No. 275 First Edition, April 2024. • EMV Level 1 Specifications for Payment Systems, EMV Contactless Interface Specification, version 3.1, December 2020. • EMV Contactless Terminal Type Approval Bulletin 276, Reduced Range Devices Acceptance Criteria, April 2024. Effective Date • Immediately EMVCo has been exploring the introduction of minimum acceptance criteria and a supporting approval process for Reduced Range devices (in addition to the existing process for traditional payment devices) that defines three levels of user experience with different requirements relating to read range and positioning as outlined within the EMV Contactless Interface Specification. The introduction of two new Reduced Range Approvals will allow EMVCo, and industry participants, to start measuring the performance of these devices and provide feedback on how to improve their read range over time. This second edition announces the release of administrative documents listed hereafter. • EMV Contactless Terminal Level 1 Type Approval – Reduced Range Administrative Process v3.1a This document describes the overall Contactless Terminal Reduced Range PCD Level 1 Type Approval Process and the templates and forms to be completed by the participants in the process. • EMV Reduced Range Implementation Conformance Statement v3.1a. This document describes the Level 1 testing guidelines applicable to Reduced Range products, using the EMVCo PCD Level 1 Test Plans. • EMV Contactless Terminal Level 1 Type Approval – Reduced Range Interoperability Test Application Requirements v1.0. This document provides the requirements for the Interoperability Test Application to be used for Reduced Range Interoperability tests in case a product does not support the Test Application provided by EMVCo to Testing Laboratories. • EMV Contactless Terminal Type Approval Bulletin 276: Reduced Range Devices Acceptance Criteria. This document describes the specific Analogue and Interoperability Acceptance Criteria that EMVCo will consider when reviewing the test results to decide whether a Reduced Range Letter of Approval can be granted. This release opens the Reduced Range PCD Type Approval Process. While laboratories and tool providers are finalizing their recognition and qualifications, the Product Providers can reach out to EMVCo to sign required agreements and to their laboratory(ies) to confirm availability. Valuing early implementers’ efforts, EMVCo will waive EMVCo Terminal Type Approval Fees for the first 20 products submitted to EMVCo for the Reduced Range PCD Type Approval process, with a maximum of two per Product Provider, provided complete laboratory reports are received by September the 30th, 2025.
