EMV<sup>®</sup> Specification Bulletin No. 264 First Edition February 2022 Contact – Warm Reset Initiation This Specification Bulletin clarifies the ICC requirements when a Warm Reset is initiated by the terminal in the further stages of the transaction

Description
In current specification the initiation of a warm reset is required only during or immediately after an incompliant cold ATR. However, based on ISO/IEC standards terminals are allowed to initiate a warm reset during further stages or at the end of the transaction. While such behaviour is not prohibited by EMV a card response is not defined for late warm resets. This bulletin clarifies the card requirements in case a warm reset occurring any time of the transaction besides rejected cold ATR or erroneous PPS exchange.

Besides following a rejected ATR or an erroneous PPS exchange, if the terminal initiates a warm reset sequence during the later stages of the transaction, the card shall respond correctly with the warm ATR.
