Naming Convention for EMV® Technology and Word Mark Usage Guidelines March 2022 This document is intended for anyone writing or using the term ‘EMV®’ or referencing EMV technology. Specific use cases are shared that detail how the EMV naming convention and registered word mark are to be used, including in technical documents, presentations, websites, traditional and social media, external business publications, images and videos/ animations. The word ‘EMV’ is a registered trademark that is exclusively owned by EMVCo, the technical body that facilitates the worldwide interoperability of secure payment transactions by managing and publishing EMV Specifications and their related testing processes. Using the EMV word mark clearly distinguishes products, services and solutions that align to EMV Specifications. EMVCo actively encourages all payment stakeholders to make factually accurate statements and representations concerning EMV Specifications across all communication channels. EMVCo does not request a license for use of ‘EMV’, however, it does require compliance with these Usage Guidelines. EMV® is a registered trademark in the U.S. and other countries and an unregistered trademark elsewhere. The EMV trademark is owned by EMVCo, LLC. It is important to note that: Use of EMV as part of a domain name is prohibited. However, use of EMV within the body of a website is permitted so long as the use is otherwise compliant with these guidelines. Use of EMV as part of a company name or trade name is prohibited, including use by companies or organisations providing products or services complying with EMV Specifications. EMV may not be incorporated or combined with any other mark or word (prefixes or suffixes) without prior written agreement from EMVCo and parentheses (brackets) should not be used around the word. EMV may not be used in way that is misleading or likely to cause confusion as to whether a person, entity, product, service or website is affiliated to EMVCo, or to make fraudulent claims about the compliance of a product or service. 01 Using the term ‘EMV’ EMVCo requests that ‘EMV’ is used consistently when discussing products, services and solutions that align to the EMV Specifications and when referring to an EMV Specification, e.g. EMV 3DS. Examples of when to use the term in different formats is shown below and in the ‘Use Case’ section of this guide. As the EMV technology toolbox comprises a number of different payment technologies from both face-to-face and remote payment environments, it is important to be clear about ‘what’ EMV payment technology is being referred to whenever possible and the context in which the EMV technology is being used. This document provides examples of how to implement this across different communication mediums. EMVCo requires the registration mark® to be accompanied by the following attribution: EMV® is a registered trademark in the U.S. and other countries and an unregistered trademark elsewhere. The EMV trademark is owned by EMVCo, LLC. As EMV is used as the ‘umbrella’ term to distinguish and clearly identify the EMV Specification suite and technical outputs from the body to external audiences, all specifications and technical frameworks use EMV as part of their name. Within this context (when the full specification name is used) the registration mark is still required. In addition, EMVCo reports that 66% of all issued cards are EMV, with over 86% of all cardpresent transactions conducted globally using EMV chip technology. EMVCo developed the EMV Chip Specifications as a blueprint for chip cards and payment terminals to work together and in the same way, no matter where they were used. This has made seamless and secure chip card payments possible anywhere in the world. "Surpassing 10 billion EMV cards deployed worldwide clearly reflects the benefits that EMV chip offers to merchants, acquirers, card issuers, businesses and consumers through improved transaction security, reduced counterfeit cards and fraud, and a consistent payment experience," explains Junya Tanaka, EMVCo Executive Committee Chair. "We are continuing to see significant and sustained momentum for EMV chip technology across all regions, with Asia-Pacific and the United States in particular showing robust growth across both EMV issuance and adoption." The role card payments play in facilitating global commerce has been brought into sharp focus over the past 18 months, as consumers and businesses of all sizes have increasingly shifted away from cash. Tanaka adds: "EMVCo remains committed to the delivery of safe, convenient and reliable payments in-store and online, and is working closely with payment industry stakeholders and technical groups across the world to advance and evolve the EMV Specifications. Our work aims to not only support emerging technologies such as QR Codes and wireless payments, but also the new ways in which consumers engage and pay for goods and services." As a result, EMV Specifications are widely used to create payment products and services that deliver trusted and convenient payments for merchants and consumers in Europe and around the world. EMVCo is structured to develop global specifications that enable card-based payment products to work seamlessly and securely around the world. The world’s card payments systems facilitate trillions of dollars of consumer and business spending each year. EMVCo’s members are the six global card payments networks, which recognise a shared responsibility for the reliability and security of these payment transactions and the technology infrastructure that makes them possible. EMVCo’s organisational structure reflects this responsibility with these companies serving as member-owners, and engaging and collaborating with hundreds of organisations, regulators and technical bodies around the world to develop EMV Specifications. EMVCo recognises that providing insight into specifications and major updates in development is fundamental in empowering those implementing and maintaining EMV technology with a direct say in how payment infrastructure evolves. This is a proven, effective model for creating, evolving, and promoting globally adopted specifications that support innovation and meet marketplace needs. New EMV Specifications and major updates are released for public review to enable all parties to provide comments before final publication. All stakeholders with an active interest in EMV technology can vote on whether a specification is ready for official publication through participation on EMVCo’s Board of Advisors. EMVCo casts a wide net of technology providers and payments organizations that it communicates with when developing specs. It’s a list that includes virtually every key payments company, technology provider, security firm or financial services organization. David Heun, Associate Editor, PaymentsSource I think that EMVCo does what it does very well… EMVCo is owned by the card companies and that makes sense, since it’s their intent to provide security and protection to their card issuers, processors and merchants… I’m not clear on who else should be responsible for managing the security of their offerings, if not the payment networks.
